Speak Up and Be Heard

Talking to an elected official may seem intimidating, but it’s important to remember that they WANT to know what you think and action dayhow they can help.

In March, DAP Board members and staff joined forces at the Action Day at the Capitol to raise awareness of the devastating effects domestic violence has on individuals’ lives and our community.   “The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW) and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA) were well organized and prepared us for a day of action at the legislature,” reports Board member Jessica Wiley.  “They provided orientation sessions to explain the bills and help each of us with the process for meeting our legislators. We met with Representatives and Senators who we found to be welcoming and supportive of DAPs issues.  We sat in on a hearing where Carol (Arthur) testified for a bill that would allow courts to bar people under domestic violence restraining orders from having guns.  Finally there were two rallies; a men’s rally on the steps of the Capitol (COLD!) and an inspiring assembly in the rotunda (WARM!).  Next year we hope to involve more board members and DAP supporters – the legislators really need to hear from us!
